This session will share an innovative model for incorporating reentry planning into mitigation investigations and presentations for two groups of individuals who were initially charged in the adult criminal justice system as youth: current young people (under 18) charged as adults and “juvenile lifers,” who as children were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole and are now eligible for resentencing hearings pursuant to the U.S. Supreme Court cases of Miller v. Alabama and Montgomery v. Louisiana. Based in Philadelphia, the Youth Sentencing & Reentry Project has developed an innovative model of mitigation and reentry planning that has broad applicability for other jurisdictions. This session will share the specific aspects of our model, lessons we have learned about the importance of planning for reentry from as close to arrest as possible, and how to structure and support the implementation of reentry plans throughout the court process.
