As sentencing advocates, our written work should and can be as unique as our clients and their lives. Attendees will review and discuss writing materials that can be used in/for all stages of a case, including sentencing. We will discuss skills for gathering information, creating reentry plans, and developing written material that speaks for our clients and offers solutions for the community to consider when thinking about and deciding upon consequences. The session will cover traditional mitigation reports and their development as well as reports less commonly used and how they have been effective in sentencing and mitigation. Attendees will also learn about techniques used to build mitigation, such as interviewing skills, developing relationships with family and community, restorative justice, and record gathering.
