Dr. Sara Boyd will present on the topic of utilizing mitigation and information from the defendant's social history to combat the diagnoses of Antisocial Personality Disorder (as well as Conduct Disorder). Often, the specific DSM criteria used for concluding such a diagnosis is further illuminated once viewed in the light of mitigation and context. Dr. Boyd will pose a hypothetical ASPD diagnosis and break down the specific sub-criteria relied upon for such, as explained by the defendant's mitigation and social history characteristics. These diagnostic labels are often more harmful to our clients in navigating life during and after the legal system. We will discuss the intricacies of analyzing these diagnoses and common mistakes practitioners make.
